FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. – Lieutenant General of the U.S. Army, John F. Campbell, sent out a birthday message to the Screaming Eagles of the 101st Airborne Division in his “Friends of the Army” August Update:
“Happy 70th birthday to all the past and present Screaming Eagles of the 101st Airborne Division! Seventy years ago this week young volunteers assembled at Camp Claiborne, LA to begin training for WWII. MG William C. Lee, the first Eagle 6, welcomed those recruits with ‘[The division has] no history but has a rendezvous with destiny.’ The intervening 70 years have proven how prescient he was! The 101st Airborne has played a critical, if not decisive, role in every US Military involvement since. Even now one brigade of the 101st Airborne remains deployed in Afghanistan, with another on its way shortly, continuing the division’s enduring ‘rendezvous with destiny’ with the same distinction and honor as the original Band of Brothers. Today in fact the Division is passing in review as part of the Week of the Eagles…CSM Hill retired this morning with his old battle buddy General David Petreaus doing the honors; thanks to CSM Hill for his service to our Nation!”
