FORT CAMPBELL, Ky., Feb. 4, 2012 – Thirty-three Fort Campbell Soldiers will be heading to Super Bowl XLVI in Indianapolis, Ind. Sunday morning, thanks to the support of the Tennessee Titans and owner K.S. "Bud" Adams Jr.
The Soldiers, who have earned non-commissioned officer and Soldier of the year awards - among others, will represent Fort Campbell and the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), as the New England Patriots and the New York Giants battle for the Vince Lombardi Trophy.
Adams, a WWII veteran, was named the first recipient of the Salute to Service Award today, at the inaugural NFL Honors award ceremony.
"I want to congratulate Mr. Adams for receiving the Salute to Service Award and inviting a group of deserving 101st Soldiers to the Super Bowl,” said MFort Campbell, KY. – Soldiers from Fort Campbell left early Sunday morning heading to Super Bowl XLVI in Indianapolis, Indiana thanks to the support of the Tennessee Titans and owner K.S. “Bud” Adams Jr.
A group of 33 Soldiers were made up of 14 from the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) and the remaining troops from the 5th Special Forces Group and the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment.
Adams was honored Saturday as the first recipient of the Salute to Service Award presented by USAA, the National Football League’s Official Military Appreciation Sponsor.
Over the years thousands of Soldiers from Fort Campbell have attended Titan’s home games in Nashville as guests of Adams and the team and have had the opportunity to spend time with the team’s players, cheerleaders and staff.
“I want to congratulate Mr. Adams for receiving the Salute to Service Award and inviting a group of deserving 101st Soldiers to the Super Bowl,” said Major General James C. McConville, Commanding General of the 101st and Fort Campbell.
Lieutenant Colonel Frank Garcia Public Affairs Officer with Fort Campbell Public Affairs talked about the Soldiers as they boarded the bus on Post. “What a great opportunity for these guys, just an awesome, awesome thing the Titans have been able to do. It’s a great opportunity for them, I’m sure they’re going to have a great time,” Garcia said.
The Soldiers were chosen on their merit along with winning honors like being recognized as Soldier of the Year for their respective brigades and Non Commissioned Officer of the Year for each brigade of the 101st along with 5th Group and the 160th.
One Soldier, Specialist Lance Christie, shared his excitement about being chosen to go to the Super Bowl and represent the 101st and Fort Campbell. “I’m absolutely excited, it’s a heck of an honor and I’m pretty blessed to be going. It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity,” Christie said.
