In the United States if you randomly asked what the number one killer for women was, odds are you would hear breast cancer, or cervical cancer. In fact, the number one killer for women in the U.S. is heart disease according to The American Heart Association.
The Clarksville chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution became aware of the lack of information concerning women’s heart health after a presentation describing the risks. Becky Poppleton the chapter public relations representative took the information and ran with it according to Elsie Baggett Smith Registrar of the DAR.
Poppleton explained that she did a little research through the American Heart Association and found that on February 3, to kick off American Heart Month, groups across the nation would enlist mayors to declare the day “Go Red for Women.” The push is a national effort to increase awareness about risks to women and their heart health.
In Clarksville, both county mayor Carolyn Bowers and city mayor Kim McMillan agreed to provide the proclamation.
During Friday’s ceremony, McMillan, dressed all in red, officially pronounced the date “Go Red for Women” in both the city and county. Mayor Bowers was unable to attend due to previous obligations.
Poppleton explained that when she contacted both mayor’s offices, were already welled versed in the impact of heart disease on women. The PR representative said neither mayor needed to be convinced to agree to the proclamation. Both Bowers and McMillan were eager to do their part.
The Daughters of the American Revolution have a table set up in the library with information about heart health, the American Heart Association, and the DAR. The display will remain until 2 p.m. Friday but the DAR welcomes all members of the community to wear red and educate themselves as well as others in celebration of women’s heart health.
