CLARKSVILLE, Tenn.—The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance began helping Clarksville taxpayers file their 2011 tax returns at the First Missionary Baptist Church Fellowship Hall on Fairview Lane Thursday.
The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance or VITA Program offers free tax help to people who make $50,000 or less and need assistance in preparing their own tax returns. The IRS-certified volunteers provide free basic income tax return preparation to qualified individuals in local communities. They inform taxpayers about special tax credits for which they may qualify such as Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit, and Credit for the Elderly or the Disabled.
“This is a wonderful program that helps many of low income get their taxes filed,” Anne Brink, Volunteer with VITA, said.
Brink added that they will be helping with preparation all the way up to April 14th and to avoid a lengthy wait for assistance the best time to use the free service is during the month March when the rush to get taxes filed slows down.
“The first two-weeks and the last two-weeks are our busiest times. So March is definitely the time to shorten the wait,” Brink, said.
Also volunteering their time at the VITA event was Regions Bank. Employees of the financial institution were there assisting taxpayers in getting their refunds sooner.
“Regions Bank encourages its employees to volunteer in the community, and today, we were here offering NOW cards which allows taxpayers to receive their refunds sooner than receiving a check in 4-6 weeks,” Jenny Mims, Financial Service Specialist at Regions Bank, said.
