CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – West Creek High School had a celebration this afternoon, as one of their own, Senior C.J. Board, signed a national letter of intent to continue his football career with the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
Board, in his usual calm and cool manner, stood in front of the assembled crowd and thanked them for coming. He focused on his friends and teammates, who he was quick to point out, took everyone to get there.
“We have done so much in my time here, and I would not be here today without all of you.”
When Board was asked about why he chose UTC, his answer was simply about those who matter the most to him, family and friends. “Chattanooga is close to home, so my family can come and see me play. And the coaches, from the start, kept telling me about the opportunity I would have there, to compete and play for them”
Today was a special day for Board, with his mother, father, and sister in attendance, as well as many friends, and even family members of teammates on hand for the event.
“Today is just amazing; this shows what you can achieve when you work hard. That hard work as paid off for me today.”
The All-state wide receiver was a member of the Tennessean Dream Team this past season, and was on Tennessee’s All-State 5A squad as a junior with 817 receiving yards and 10 TDs on 48 catches. Board is a three-time, all-district and all-area team selection, and a two-time all-regional selection on the football field, as well as a standout three-sport star, which was also all-district in baseball and basketball. In the classroom, Board is at the top of his class, and is a member of the National Honor Society.
The Mocs of UT-Chattanooga finished last season 5 and 6 overall, with 5 of those losses coming by a combined 5 points, three by just one point. UTC competes in the Southern Conference, with the likes of Georgia Southern and Western Carolina. Head Coach Russ Huesman is a graduate of UTC, and is entering his fourth season at the helm, released the following statement upon the receipt of C.J.’s commitment papers to the university;
"C.J. is a wide receiver, who is a phenomenal student and excellent football player. We had him in our camp and absolutely loved him. He is a big, tall guy that we really think is going to be good for us."
Local fans in the Clarksville area will get a chance to see Board compete on the collegiate level, as the Mocs and Austin Peay will start a football home and home series, starting in 2013.
