Tuesday night, the matchup between Northeast and Northwest boy’s basketball teams was predicted to be a lopsided affair. Northeast came into the game with only one loss in District play and Northwest came into the game winless in District play. As it turns out, lopsided was an understatement. The Northeast Eagles clobbered the Northwest Vikings, 85-26.
The Northeast Eagles opened the game by rattling off 19 straight points before the Vikings scored on a free throw by Xavier Shavers. The quarter ended with the Eagles on top, 26 to 3.
With such a commanding lead, Northeast coach Al Cooper had so many substitutions, it looked like a hockey line change every 3 minutes. The scoring was evenly dispersed for the Eagles as they led at halftime, 57 to 12.
Despite a bigger presence of bench and role players in the second half, the Eagles continued their dominance. Through three quarters of play, the Vikings never scored more than nine points in a quarter while the Eagles averaged 26.
Due to the high school mercy rule, the clock ran continuously in the 4th quarter so each team scored no more than seven points.
Northeast’s Darrius Brown led all scorers with 18, Alex Poythress had 15, and Carlos Herrera tossed in 11. Northwest’s Terrell Chambers was the only player in double figures for the Vikings with 11, and Xavier Shavers had 6.
