The coffee shop in historic downtown Clarksville filled quickly Tuesday with members of the community looking forward to the president’s State of the Union. The party, sponsored by the supporters for the 2012 re-election of President Obama, became a standing room only event long before the President made his appearance.
Terry McMoore, organizer of the event, called the group to attention just before President Obama came on the screens. McMoore explained to the group that although the party was primarily to view the State of the Union, it also provides interested members of the public the opportunity to get involved in the upcoming elections and to support Obama’s re-election.
As the president began to speak there were cheer, applause, and yes, even once some boos. The group seemed to appreciate moments when the President made strong, declaratory statements. Strong applause came when Obama explained it was “unfair” for a billionaire to pay a lower rate in taxes than a person of the middle class.
The watch party at New South was definitely a Democrat friendly crowd but even the group was not all satisfied with all the President’s statements. When Obama remarked he was going to open 75 percent of the off shore drilling sites for oil drilling, several of the program watchers booed the statement.
