Phony Debt Settlement Company Contacting Clarksville Woman

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - Clarksville Police report a group of people, posing as a debt settlement company, have been calling a woman seeking personal financial information and claiming to have a summons against her.

According to a police report, 28-year-old Heaven Wadsworth received numerous calls from the outfit asking for $100 to settle the debt. The suspects also instructed Wadsworth to contact a named attorney but did not provide contact information. Wadsworth reportedly called one number provided and talked to at least two different people, though she did not pay any money in response to their requests.

Under Federal law, debt collection agencies have to abide by certain rules and practices and must cease contacting you if you request they do so in writing. To see more guidelines on what is permitted under law follow this FTC link: http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/credit/cre18.shtm.
