End Slavery TN Speaks Out About Anti-Trafficking Bills

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - This week, Tennessee took three major steps forward toward creating a slave-free state with Governor Bill Haslam’s signing of three important laws.

The Tennessee Human Trafficking Resource Center Hotline Act establishes within the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) a state hotline for human trafficking victims and tipsters and makes provision for posting the hotline number in establishments within key industries.

Earlier this week, the Governor signed an asset forfeiture bill and a bill protecting minors from being charged with prostitution (already given a Public Chapter number).

End Slavery Tennessee Director Derri Smith said, “We who devote our lives to seeing the end of human trafficking and slavery in our state are encouraged by this visible progress. It was the hard work and collaborative efforts of law enforcement, legislators and nonprofit organizations, like End Slavery Tennessee, that brought us to this point. And it is exciting to see TBI freed to focus more resources on this tragic and fast-growing crime. This collaborative approach will help us reach this and future milestones in the march to re-establish Tennessee as a slave-free state.”
