President of Smithfield Manufacturing, Ron Smithfield and Vice President, David Smithfield led the tours of the plant as they shared the history of the company. The two brothers have owned and managed the business since it was incorporated in 1974.
The business began with Ron and David’s parents, Basil and Sue Smithfield and the name Queen City Tool and Die on November 1, 1952. The name was changed to Smithfield Industries Inc. in 1974 when Ron and David took over and that name remained until 1995 when it became Smithfield Manufacturing Inc.
The history of the company’s success as a family business has been through a number of hardships like the tornado in 1999 which destroyed half of the plant. In spite of much of the building being out of commission a team effort from the workers at Smithfield saw that not one customer shipment was missed.
The story of how the company survived and recovered from the tornado that struck Clarksville earned SMI the Better Business Bureau’s Torch Award for Marketplace Ethics for 2000 as well as national runners-up at the 2001 Better Business Bureau National Convention.
In 2005 SMI became ISO9000: 2000 registered. It was renewed in 2008 under ISO9000:2008 and in 2011. In 2012 Smithfield became Green Certified by the Clarksville-Montgomery County Green Certification Program and won the Best Small Company Program Award.
