CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Austin Peay’s Dunn Center was filled with Kenwood High School Seniors Saturday evening who were all ready to graduate as school faculty, family and friends stood by to show their support. This year was the 14th Commencement Ceremony for over 250 students leaving high school to make their mark in the world.
As had been heard many times over the past three days, Pomp and Circumstance echoed throughout the Dunn Center as the school faculty and then the students made their way across the floor and up the aisle to their seats. Kenwood was the last of eight graduation ceremonies, including the Austin Peay Middle College, to take place over the past three days.
“Your future as a grown person starts today, the future you focus on and the choices you make now are the foundation for the rest of your life. So think about what you’re going to do, discuss it with your family and friends. Seek out advice from people who have been there and done that. Be proud of your accomplishments, you make us proud today,” Kenwood High School Principal Hal Bedell told the students.
Principal Bedell then presented the 2011 class to the Director of Clarksville-Montgomery County Schools, Mr. Mike Harris who accepted and congratulated the graduates. As their names were called each student took their walk across the stage accepting their diploma and shaking hands with both members of the school faculty and school officials. Then came the traditional turning of the tassel on the caps and a moment later the caps were tossed into the air.
The students then marched through the front doors of the Dunn Center to family and friends who joined them on the steps and the lawn outside for lots of well wishes and congratulations. There were also lots of photos and video being taken and of course lots hugs and handshakes.
Talking about being out of school, graduate Rafael Sylvester told Clarksvillenow.com, “It feels amazing, you’ve dreamed about this day since your freshmen year. It’s a tumultuous ride but at the same time it’s gratifying. You go through high school just waiting for this day and when it’s finally here all you can do is smile.”
