CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - Clarksville Mayor Kim McMillan will present a proclamation at the Clarksville Montgomery County Public Library at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, February 3, 2012 declaring the day “Go Red for Women” day in Clarksville and Montgomery County.  The proclamation is signed by both Mayor McMillan and Montgomery County Mayor Carolyn Bowers.
 
The “Go Red for Women” event joins others across Tennessee in recognizing the impact heart disease has on the women in our communities.  “Many people don’t realize that heart disease is the number one cause of death for women in our country,” said Mayor McMillan.
 
According to the American Heart Association, cardiovascular diseases take a disproportionate toll on women, claiming nearly 420,000 lives each year.  This is more than the three leading causes of death, including all forms of cancer.  Many women aren’t aware of this fact and are unaware of their own risk factors.
 
The DARlings of the Captain Edmiston Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) are joining with the library and the American Heart Association of Nashville to host the event on Friday, February 3, celebrating National Wear Red Day®.  The free event will be from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and they will provide information about becoming heart healthy.  The library will also display a special selection of books about healthy living.
 
“Although your family’s history plays a role in your health, there is a lot each of us can do to live a heart healthier lifestyle,” Mayor McMillan said.  “I appreciate the Captain Edmiston Chapter of the DAR, the Heart Association and our public library for joining forces and bringing this information to us.  Please join Mayor Bowers and me in showing support for the women in our community by wearing red.”
