Lady Govs Golf Tied for Third after First Round of Murray Tournament

MURRAY, Ky. –Freshman Jessica Cathey picked up where she left off and was Austin Peay State University’s low score after the first round of the Time Warner Classic, being played at Miller Memorial Golf Course.
Cathey, the Hixon native, was the Lady Govs’ only sub-80 round during the spring’s opening 18 holes, shooting a 78 to help lift to a third-place tie with Eastern Kentucky at 324. Host Murray State, playing on its home course, leads the way after shooting 312. Lipscomb is second at 321.
“We didn’t play like I thought we would play today,” APSU coach Sara Robson said. ”I don’t think we took what we had been working on in practice to the golf course.
“We just missed way too many greens—we had been hitting the ball so well in practice but our ball striking today wasn’t what I was expecting to see. We just didn’t execute shots like I thought we would. Our short game was good and that kind of saved us.”
Ironically, Cathey was one of the few Govs who struggled on the green. Junior Tala Mumford (80) and senior (81) both had problems off the tee but scrambled to get up and down. After missing much of the fall with a medical issue, junior Rachel Deaton fired an 85 in first round back for APSU’s 324 score. Holly Batey shot an 88.
Playing as individuals, sophomore Meghan Mueller fired an 84 while senior Lauren Bond had an 88
“Spring golf is so different than fall,” Robson said. “You are dealing with colder temperatures, wetter conditions...I thought Jessica did okay for her first spring round.
“But as a group we are capable of so much more. They just have to be confident in executing their game plans. If you are not confident then you are not going to show what you are capable of.”
