Green Certification Program Named Government Recycler of the Year

Story submitted by Elizabeth Black

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee Recycling Coalition (TRC) recently selected the Clarksville-Montgomery County Green Certification Program (CMCGCP) as the TRC Government Recycler of the Year! This honor was awarded at its annual conference held in February and is presented to a local, regional or state governmental agency that has instituted comprehensive waste prevention and recycling programs.
The judging criteria include:
  • Involving an extensive or unique population base in the program
  • Achieving significant waste stream diversion and/or diversion of newly marketable materials
  • Describes practical and successful program methodologies for collection
  • Demonstrates ability of program to be modeled in other communities

Since its inception in March 2011, the CMCGCP has had 80 organizations participate in its program and 28 have completed all requirements and achieved certification. Through educational efforts like school recycling teams and the CMCGCP, Bi-County SWM realized a 350 ton increase in recyclables from 2011 to 2012.

For more information on the CMCGCP, visit www.mcgtn.org/green or contact Michelle Newell at 931-245-1867.
