Golf Govs Invited to Play in Prestigious Fall 2013 Event

Story submitted by Brad Kirtley-Austin Peay State University Sports Information

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn.- Although the spring college golf season is still a few months away, Austin Peay State University already knows at least one prestigious tournament it will be participating during the Fall 2013 season.

The Governors have been invited to play in the NCAA Regional Preview, hosted by the University of Missouri, Sept. 15-17, at The Club of Old Hawthorne in Columbia, Mo. It was recently announced Missouri and Old Hawthorne will serve as host to an NCAA Regional, May 15-17, 2014.

Currently, Austin Peay is one of 12 teams committed to play in the event. In addition to the Govs, ranked 106th by GolfStat after the fall season, the host Tigers (ranked 19th and coach by former Govs coach Mark Leroux), Memphis (75), Tulsa (31), Iowa State (93), Kansas State (100), San Francisco (57), Mississippi (43), Louisiana Lafeyette (132), South Alabama (56), Nebraska (154) and Akron (92) all will be participating.

"We feel very fortunate to play in such a great event with a bunch of top notch quality teams on a great golf course," APSU coach Kirk Kayden said. "It will give us a good indication of where we are as a team early in that year playing against this strong of a field.

"It also shows us that our program is moving the right direction and getting a lot of respect from the major conference schools."

Potentially it will be the third time current Govs juniors Anthony Bradley and Maro Iten will have played the course.

The Governors are scheduled to play in the Columbia Orthopedic Group Mizzou Intercollegiate in early April, also played at Old Hawthorne, after finishing second in the event last spring.
