A total of 604 flags will be flying during the 11th anniversary of 9/11.  603 to symbolize the loss of soldiers from Fort Campbell since Sept. 11, 2001 and one for Sgt. Jacob Schwallie with the 82nd Airborne who passed away earlier this year.

According to McLaughlin, the flags are placed every year on September 11th, Veteran’s Day, Memorial Day and July 4th, with the help of the Combat Vet’s Motorcycle Association.

When asked why she was so involved with all the patriotic events, Mclauglin said, “My husband was a soldier who retired after 22 years and I was lucky enough that he retired after 22 years and every time he deployed he came home and I’m one of the lucky ones.”  She added, “Being part of the military was one of the greatest part of our lives and we want to make sure we’re there for the military families as well.”

Army Sgt. Jacob M. Schwallie, 22, of Clarksville, Tenn.; assigned to 3rd Squadron, 73rd Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, N.C.; died May 7 in Ghazni province, Afghanistan, of wounds caused by an improvised explosive device.
