CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - Produced by The Downtown Clarksville Association, First Thursday Art Walk is a free, self-guided tour spanning a 5-block radius that combines visual art, live music, engaging events and more in the heart of Downtown Clarksville.
With 10+ venues, bars and businesses participating each month, the First Thursday Art Walk in Clarksville is the ultimate opportunity to savor and support local creative talent.
For the month of March, the Art Walk will be held on Thursday, March 7th from 5:00 – 8:00 pm at the shops and galleries on Public Square, Franklin Street, and Strawberry Alley. The participating businesses are listed below as well as a description of the work they will be exhibiting and services they will be offering during the event.
Hodgepodge (125 Franklin Street) is delighted to offer something entirely new for Art Walk this month. Kimberly Santiago, “curator” of the mixed media supplies found in the Creative Corner at Hodgepodge, has put together a demonstration of “Zentangles.”
In addition to the demonstration, Hodgepodge will be giving away a limited number of Zentangle starter kits with purchase. Art Walk attendees will be delighted to learn more about this relaxing, yet fun way to create.
For the March Art Walk, Rogate’s Boutique (115 Franklin Street) will be showcasing Playing Hooky, fashionable, eco-friendly designer handbags for the environmentally conscious.
“At the urging of my youngest daughter to ‘help her save the planet’, I went in search of a craft that would allow me to repurpose the plastic grocery bags that had begun to take over my kitchen,” said Playing Hooky owner Renee Watkins. “I completed my first bag two days later.”
All handbags are crocheted using plarn. Plarn is a durable material constructed from recycled plastic shopping bags. Each purse is unique and styles range from clutches to shopping bags.
The Downtown Artists Co-op (96 Franklin Street) is an association of talented local artists and interested patrons dedicated to promoting the visual arts in the Clarksville/Montgomery County area.
March is National Youth Art Month (YAM) and every year DAC invites a local school to use their gallery to hang an art exhibit. This year, the Ft. Campbell High School art class under the tutelage of Ms. Hanna Hale will be exhibiting their work. The show opens on March 7th during the First Thursday Art Walk. The opening reception will be from 5:00 – 8:00 pm and the public is invited to attend.
The New South Coffee Company (110 Franklin Street) will be featuring live music performed by local musicians.
The Runner’s Hub (127 Franklin Street) hosts group runs around Historic Downtown Clarksville every Thursday evening at 5:30. They will be hosting a group run on Art Walk Thursday evening at 5:30 pm as well.
Ingredients (100 Strawberry Alley) will be hosting Chef Reese and photographer Teri Hanna Schultz.
As a chef with Serve Safe, Human Resource mgt, Nutrition & Cost Control Credentials, Chef Reese has been able to combine creative methods and cooking to deliver a product that looks and tastes delicious.
In a nutshell, her passion is now her career. She strives to serve clients with high quality food during functions/events and her company is based on the belief that the customer’s needs are of the utmost importance. As a result, a high percentage of Chef Reese’s business is from repeat customers and referrals.
Teri Hanna Schultz moved to Clarksville in the summer of ’86 when her husband Deane was transferred to Ft. Campbell with 5th Special Forces Group. After retiring, they moved to their home overlooking the Cumberland River that they fondly call “The Sticks”. Teri has been shooting photos ever since her great grandmother gave her a Brownie camera when she was 5 years old.
She states: “My passions are travel and cuisines; this colors everything in my life. Photography is a way to share my experiences with others. I want my photos to capture the essence of a single particular moment in a way that makes the viewer feel they were a part of it. I chose to make photos of images that capture the beauty in life; maybe finding an angle that makes a common view different or showing a detail that one might have missed.”
The Framemaker (705 North 2nd Street, Ste B) proudly presents work by graphic designer and photographer Mike Fink as part of Clarksville’s First Thursday Art Walk. An opening reception will be held from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Thursday, March 7. The exhibit will remain on display at the Framemaker throughout the month of March during normal business hours (Monday through Friday 10:00 am – 5:00 pm).
Mike Fink is a graduate of the Art Center College of Design, with a bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Graphic Design and Advertising. He’s been a freelance designer since 1979 and works primarily in the music, arts and educational fields. His client list includes Universal Music, L.A. Eyeworks, Getty Center and Austin Peay State University. Mike’s exhibit is a diary of infrared photos that document his trip home from an overnight stay in Vinalhaven, Maine. Vinalhaven is still home to a thriving lobster fishery and hosts a traditional summer vacation community.
The Framemaker is located at the corner of North Second Street and Georgia Avenue, across from Clarksville Academy.
The Austin Peay Downtown Gallery (116 Strawberry Alley) is dedicated to exhibiting the works of APSU faculty and alumni.
The Roxy Regional Theatre – Peg Harvill Gallery (110 Franklin Street) will display a group show by various local artists. All of the art and themes will be tied into the upcoming production of “Romeo & Juliet” being featured at The Roxy Regional Theatre.
