Edington’s first came on the scene in Clarksville after Conrad Edington worked for several years at another furniture store in Clarksville, all the while saving up money in hopes to someday have his own store. It all became a reality when he purchased the property for his dream store in 1996, and opened the doors to Edington’s the next year.Conrad Edington & Christina Clark sat down with me on one of the comfortable displays in the store to talk a little bit about the store’s history, as well as its future, and Edington’s commitment of service to their customers.
Edington’s desire to have his own unique store goes all the way back to his college years. “When I went to college I majored in interior design, and I knew at that point that I wanted to have a complete design center with furniture, interior design work, draperies, everything under one roof. So this is my dream. Literally this is it,” said Edington.
Edington’s has many lines of furnishings, but you can’t talk about Edington’s without mentioning Flexsteel, the feature line offered by the store which has been a best seller for 15 years. Edington spoke about taking his employees to market before he opened the store how he wanted an inexperienced person to find a line of furniture.
In the end, all three of his employees came back to him with Flexsteel, a company that has been in business for 107 years.
“At the end of the day we all went to Flexsteel, and looked at it and they told me their story, jump up and down on the furniture, all of that kind of stuff and I said that’s the line I want,” Edington said.
The store recently went through a bit of a name change with Etc. added to the Edington’s, which Edington said was Clark’s idea. Edington said the reason they made the change was Edington’s Furniture and Design Center was a mouthful but they still have Edington’s with Furniture Design and Accessories.
Over the summer Edington’s had a little bit of a makeover with some changes inside and out which included new paint, new lighting and a new sign. The recent makeover goes along with Edington’s philosophy over the past 15 years of always investing in his business, and always adding a little something to the store to keep it fresh. I asked Edington and Clark what they would like the public to know about their store, and Clark said, “One thing we want to emphasize is if you have been in the store and didn’t buy anything we’d like to know why. We are hoping to bring those people back, and we also want to emphasize that we are unique and different and it’s not the same you see everywhere else.”
Another aspect of my talk with Edington and Clark was they never used the term customer to describe the folks who shop with them, and I asked Clark the reason for that. “A lot of the people who come in our store may not buy that day. They might be working on a room or a house, and they want to think about it and it is a lot. We try not to pressure people to buy today and we try to develop a relationship that they are a client and not a one time customer,” Clark said.
Clark said you don’t want to spend $3,000 or $5,000 on a living room or bed room set and find out your neighbor has the exact same set. Edington’s can also help you accessorize your purchase, and help with paint colors which makes it more of a design center which Clark says other stores don’t offer. Something else that is new at Edington’s is the addition of a home theatre area inside the store.
“The main focus is to always keep the design going, but basically my store is in the center of a wheel, the spoke of a wheel. I really want people to realize this is the store to come to first or last whichever way you want to approach it, and they’re going to come in here and find something different,” Edington said when asked about the future of the store.
Clark added, “We really want Edington’s to be Clarksville’s premier furniture center.”
